I felt incredulous that I was have to submit evidence of our true marriage and the actual birth records of our children. Falsifying the marriage meant falsifying their birth status, possibly their citizenship. A ruling by the court accepting Made's marriage meant she could potentially destroy their U.S. passports, acquire new Indonesian passports, and prevent them ever leaving Indonesia.

She had their passport in her safe at the house, and she had hidden the keys. I could no longer get into it with breaking something or violence, and Rifan warned my strongly against that.

California marriage registered at the Civil Records Office, Denpasar. It was registered on 6 April 2005 by a clerk from Austrindo Law Office in preparation for the divorce filing.
